Taster Session - Economics and Politics Club (Ages 12-14)

We’re excited to welcome your child to the Taster Session of Economics and Politics Club, a weekly online discussion group designed for curious and engaged students aged 12–14

Led by a final-year PPE (Philosophy, Economics and Politics) student from the University of Oxford, the club offers a unique opportunity to explore current affairs, politics, and economic thinking in a lively and supportive environment.

Each week, students will engage with a carefully selected article from leading sources such as The Economist, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, and the BBC. Through guided discussion, they will develop critical thinking skills, practice expressing their ideas, and learn to evaluate complex issues from multiple perspectives.

The taster session will take place on 18th September 2025.

This Thursday at 20:30 (TR Time) / 18:30 (UK Time)

Online via Zoom

For our taster session, students are asked to read the following article from the UK Parliament:

Votes at 16 - House of Lords Library

Learning Goals

● Understand the arguments for and against lowering the voting age

● Explore fairness, representation, and political engagement

● Evaluate how age influences voting patterns and outcomes

Discussion Prompts

  • If you can work and pay taxes at 16, should you be able to vote?
  • Would lowering the voting age make elections more fair or more political?
  • Should there be an upper age limit for voting if there’s a lower one?
  • Is voting a right or a responsibility?
  • If you could vote at 16, what issues would matter most to you — and why?
  • Name one reason why some people oppose lowering the voting age.
  • What is one benefit of allowing 16-year-olds to vote, according to research?

We warmly invite interested students to join our upcoming taster session, where they’ll experience firsthand the energy of debate, the power of ideas, and the excitement of learning from Oxford PPE mentors.
