Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health concern in the UK. Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates a 13% increase in TB cases in England in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 5,480 reported cases. In Scotland, TB cases have also increased.

The majority of cases were among people who have come into the country, but the number of cases originating inside the UK is increasing. It continues to be associated with deprivation and is more prevalent in large urban areas. Among people born in the UK, TB is more common among those experiencing homelessness, substance dependency, and contact with the criminal justice system.

This informative and interactive webinar will provide nurses with essential knowledge about TB, its symptoms and treatment, and explore the risk factors contributing to its spread. It will also highlight the crucial role nurses play in detection, prevention, and addressing health inequalities related to TB.

Learning objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to

  • Interpret current epidemiological trends in TB in the UK, including rising incidence rates, demographic shifts, and regional variations.
  • Recognise the clinical features, transmission routes, and treatment protocols for TB, including the identification of drug-resistant forms and extrapulmonary presentations.
  • Apply nursing strategies for early detection, referral, and treatment support, including contact tracing, education, and adherence support within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understand and address stigma around TB to make patients receive effective treatment
