Event description

Description

Join us on Saturday 7th October 2017 for an afternoon of writing and conversation with Dr Nydia Swaby (Researcher, SOAS) and Hana Riaz (writer/The Body Narratives).

As a city home to over 150 nationalities, cultures and communities, London’s academics, artists and writers capture and map its very fabric through their work. London becomes the backdrop and landscape to rich, complex and unique narratives – sometimes untapped, often hidden and largely only made sense of through community storytelling and discussion.

Exploring the city through poetry, prose and ethnographic research, Hana and Nydia will encourage you to think about how you can use London as a prompt and inspiration in your work.

The workshop is suitable for anyone wanting to write in a safe, inspiring and warm space. All levels are welcome.

Please let us know if you have any accessibility requirements by emailing us at hana@hana-riaz.com.

Nydia Swaby is a historian and ethnographer working at the intersection of black feminist theory, diaspora studies, and queer of color critique. She obtained a PhD at the Centre for Gender Studies at SOAS, University of London and teaches in the department of Social Anthropology. Prior to enrolling at SOAS, Nydia worked at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture as a senior page in the Archives, Manuscripts, and Rare Books Division and as a research assistant for its scholars-in-residence program. She recently joined the editorial collective for the journal Feminist Review.

Hana Riaz is a London-born and based short story writer. Hana has recently been awarded a Grant for the Arts by the Arts Council to work on her first short story collection ‘Love and other important things’. In 2015, her story ‘make it home in time’ was long listed for the London Short Story Prize. Her short stories have been published by Peepal Tree Press and the As/Us Journal.

The Body Narratives are excited to host this event at Eve and Grace, a wellbeing centre in Battersea that supports everyone supports everyone on their spiritual, physical and mental wellness journey, regardless of their age, size, gender, race or faith.
