A regrettable hazard of modern business is the relative frequency with which emails are intercepted, with fraudsters amending invoices to divert genuine payments away from their intended recipient. In some cases, this fraud is perpetrated after the fraudster has obtained illicit access to a genuine email account. What happens when a customer pays in accordance with directions received from their counterparty’s genuine email account, only to be told by the counterparty that the email was sent by a fraudster and so the customer must pay the price again?
