Event description

Description

Lack of consideration of teacher wellbeing (and the provision of supervision) is seen as having a negative impact on teachers’ lives and health. Teacher wellbeing has often been regarded as having a direct impact on the quality of teaching and learning as well as being critical to teacher retention.

With this in mind, the Chartered College of Teaching has organised a two-day workshop focusing on wellbeing, led by Dr Tim O’Brien, Visiting Fellow in Psychology and Human Development, UCL Institute of Education, and Dr Dennis Guiney, Child and Adolescent Psychologist.

The first day of this programme will be held on 15th February 2018 with a follow-up session held on 19th April 2018. Due to the nature of the discussions and focus of these sessions, this two-day programme is only open to practising teachers. To maximise the benefit of this programme, it is essential that the participants attend both days of this workshop.

The first day (15th February 2018) will focus on:

  • Wellbeing as a contested and confusing idea/concept
  • Consideration of research relating to wellbeing – especially to wellbeing in the workplace and teacher wellbeing
  • Consideration of constructs of self, inner story and mental models and how these impact upon wellbeing
  • Understanding emotions
  • Managing and understanding pressure
  • Managing and understanding stress
  • Exploring the psychological construction of hierarchies of significance

Having established and discussed wellbeing, participants will then have the opportunity to design a wellbeing intervention within this that they will run within their own context over the next six weeks.

The second day (19th April 2018) of the programme will be held approximately six weeks later. Structured similarly to an action-research framework of plan-do-review, teachers will report back to the group on the nature of their intervention and the outcomes/impact. Participants will be required to identify impact rather than simply evaluate outcomes. This is where the programme becomes more focused on knowledge exchange and will include:

  • Questioning around impact and change – what change/impact happened? How do you know? What is different now?
  • Collating interventions and their impact and reflecting on the inherent meaning and value of this data and the potential to share it.
  • Focusing on how to mobilise this knowledge (within school, school to school, Chartered College community, website) and scale up potential interventions.

Members of the Chartered College of Teaching can participate in this programme of study at the reduced cost of £250 each, which includes all resources, materials and refreshments across both days.
