Description

About the course

In this session we will consider the components of ‘Anatomy and Physiology’ within a KS3 science curriculum. We work from the premise that knowledge and understanding of ‘Anatomy and Physiology’ is composed of key hierarchical conceptual knowledge. We will consider the concept of the ‘cell’ as the first building block in this hierarchy; and how ‘cells’ as a body of knowledge develops into a highly complex schema, which is nonetheless housed within the broader concepts of ‘Anatomy and Physiology’. We will look at ‘cells’ through the lens of the ‘purpose’ of the science curriculum. What difference does an understanding of ‘Anatomy and Physiology’ make to pupils’ broader outcomes of the science curriculum?

Throughout the session we will build teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge in relation to ‘cells’ by considering the typical misconceptions that manifest through dialogue and wider scientific concepts.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at anyone who teaches biology at KS3 or KS4. Whilst suitable for non-specialists, this is primarily an opportunity for specialist biologists to engage in continuing professional development within the science that first inspired them.
