About this event

From 'Howl'

‘Let me get this straight: you want to be allowed to wear a tail, to school, as part of your school uniform, is that right?’ He tried and failed to keep the incredulity out of his voice. ‘Why?’ Pausing, he added as an afterthought, ‘And why on earth do you think we’d allow such a thing?’

The boy had come to him as Deputy Head with a very special favour to ask. He knew the boy was indeed special, in various, sometimes rather alarming ways - that much had been clear from multiple reports from his teachers, and, in his time in the job, he’d heard some pretty strange requests. But this one really took the biscuit.

‘Because it’s my religious right to do so,’ the boy replied evenly.

What are the essential ingredients that make a great short story? What can we learn from the masters of the form, such as Chekhov and Joyce? What creative tasks really get pupils' imaginations motoring?

Using ideas from a range of sources including UEA's acclaimed Masters course in Creative Writing and Booker Prize Winner novelist George Saunders' elite course at Syracuse University, Neil Bowen will provide you with heaps of practical ideas to both improve your own creative writing and help your students improve theirs too.

Currently Neil is working on a collection of short stories he plans to publish this summer.
