About this event

Help! I can't Wait to ask for a Break...and more!

This workshop is a must for parents, caregivers and professionals working and/or living with people who have complex communication needs. You will learn how to teach critical communication skills that lead to greater independence in the home, work, school and community settings. We review nine specific skills: requesting reinforcers, requesting help, requesting a break, indicating yes and no, waiting, following directions, schedule-following and transitioning. Through lecture, demonstrations, video and participatory activities, you will acquire specific teaching strategies that are relevant for anyone who has limited communication skills, regardless of their communicative modality (e.g., Picture Exchange Communication System [PECS], signing, device use, speech).

This full-day workshop will describe procedures for analysing a learner's current PECS skills to determine candidacy for transitioning to a Speech Generating Device (SGD), choosing a device, and teaching functional use of the device, and why we must teach the basic principles of communication to our learner first to ensure positive outcomes are achieved.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Define functional communication
  • Identify and evaluate nine critical communication skills
  • Design effective teaching strategies to promote these skills independent of modality
  • Incorporate effective visual strategies for all communicators
  • Incorporate critical communication skills into functional activities and routines

Organiser Pyramid Educational Consultants UK Ltd (PECS UK)

Organiser of TEACHING CRITICAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS LIVE ONLINE WORKSHOP- September

At Pyramid, it is our goal to help individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, and/or communication challenges learn to shape their own lives and participate in the world around them. Using a blend of broad spectrum applied behaviour analysis and practices supported by research and positive results, we give learners the skills to tell you what they want, what they need, what they see, and the unique educational environments they need to learn and grow towards greater independence.

The company was founded in 1992 by Andy Bondy, PhD., and Lori Frost, MS, CCC-SLP, developers of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the Pyramid Approach to Education. They developed these practices with a focus on functional communication, learning, and designing teaching strategies to support learners in their everyday environments and activities. As the company expanded across the United States and into other countries, more and more learners of all ages, along with their families, teachers, and support teams, benefited and continue to benefit from PECS and the Pyramid Approach.

Pyramid is the sole source for the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) the evidence based functional communication system. We offer an array of workshops from PECS Level 1 to Functional ABA to Managing Challenging Behaviours and SoSAFE! (social and sexual safety training for those with additional needs).

We also offer in school and in home support and sell an array of helpful products on our website.
