Description

The British Council in collaboration with the NCETM and Maths Hubs developed a two-day programme “Critical Thinking and Problem Solving in Mathematics”

This course is recommended for those teaching or leading mathematics at key stages 3 and 4, who wish to develop the use of problem solving skills and critical thinking in this challenging, new aspect of the curriculum.

On completion, participants also have the opportunity to apply for £3,000 funding from the British Council to complete a study visit in schools in Africa, Asia or Middle East.

This comprehensive blend of face to face sessions bridged with dedicated mentor support is structured to help you to:

    • Develop deeper thinking and understanding around non-routine problems through effective questioning
    • Encourage your learners to think critically and solve problems by modelling thinking processes.
    • Provide systematic feedback and correction through assessment for learning.
    • Undertake your own action research experimenting with one model/idea in a structured way back in the classroom
    • Develop leadership and self-evaluation techniques to successfully embed approaches in your practice

Day 1 is on Monday, 2 October 2017 and day 2 on Tuesday, 5 December 2017.

Sessions are led by Katharine Davies, Curriculum Developer for MEI.

The course is aimed at KS3/4 and funded places are for state-maintained providers only. The British Council aims to encourage a minimum two teachers from any individual school to attend the programme, but can accept one, or more than two depending on availability of places.
