Event description

Description

With much greater focus on mathematical problem solving and critical thinking in the revised curriculum, deeper and independent learning skills are ever more important in the classroom.

The British Council has collaborated with the NCETM to offer this free 2 day course in Cheltenham to support and help you to explore practical ways of developing and implementing these fundamental elements of mathematics teaching and learning.

This course is recommended for those teaching or leading mathematics at key stages 3 and 4, who wish to develop the use of problem solving skills and critical thinking in this challenging, new aspect of the curriculum.

This comprehensive blend of face to face sessions bridged with dedicated mentor support is structured to help you to:

  • Develop deeper thinking and understanding around non-routine problems through effective questioning
  • Encourage your learners to think critically and solve problems by modelling thinking processes.
  • Provide systematic feedback and correction through assessment for learning.
  • Undertake your own action research experimenting with one model/idea in a structured way back in the classroom
  • Develop leadership and self-evaluation techniques to successfully embed approaches in your practice

Course Structure

Day 1: Tuesday, 10 October 2017 at Balcarras School, Cheltenham

Join a face to face session 10am to 3.30pm with like-minded educators to become acquainted with CTPS and plan how you can build this into your maths teaching.

Distance Supported Action Research

Between day 1 and 2 take your learning and group experience back to the classroom to try this out within a chosen area for development.

Day 2: Wednesday, 13 December 2017 at Balcarras School, Cheltenham

Reconvene with course group 10am to 3.30pm to share the experience and impact you’ve observed in the classroom as well as best practice and next steps to embed this successfully.
