Event description

Description

The context in which Islam finds itself in contemporary Britain is quite different from in earlier generations and other contexts around the world. Unlike many other European countries, Britain is much more multi-religious with every major religion and many minority ones present in our society. The Muslim communities of Britain are hugely diverse. Young Muslims in Britain are educated alongside people of various faiths and none in an educational system that promotes critical thinking, questioning everything and an emphasis on the use of reason. How then does this impact on teaching Islam to young Muslims, helping non-Muslim people to understand Islam and promoting an educational context in which the values and insights of Islam can benefit all human beings?

A study day to be held in the Andalus Centre, Glasgow, on Saturday 13 April 2019, led by Dr Chris Hewer, who has lived with these questions for decades.

Topics:

  • Teaching Islam as the din al-fitra
  • What is the purpose of religion? Connecting with the ‘why questions’ behind the practices.
  • Teaching about schools of Islam with which one does not agree.
  • Handling the diversity within Sunni Islam.
