Event description

Description

Following the Chancellor’s Budget announcement of significant extra funding for maths, join us at Tetherdown Primary School for "Teaching Maths for Mastery: what it is, what it's not, and what it looks like in your classroom”

We all want our pupils to be successful in maths, and also to understand it and to enjoy learning and using it: we want them to master it. But how do we go about achieving this in the day-to-day? What are the core principles and practices of regular teaching that are likely to lead to our pupils developing sustained mastery in the long term? The London Thames Maths Hub has participated in an action research project and teacher exchange with Shanghai schools since 2014, and this is an opportunity for you to share in our findings so far.

What to expect?

  • Analysis of the characteristics of teaching for mastery

  • Explanation and examples of key aspects such as Variation Theory, Intelligent Practice, and Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract.

  • Effective activities that apply right across the age and topic range, and which fully support the aims of the National Curriculum

  • Advice around practical matters: differentiation, progress, and Ofsted

  • Further information about the professional development opportunities we’re offering in 2017-18
