Teaching Observations – Workshop for Observers & Observees

This CPD workshop supports academic staff in engaging meaningfully with the University of West London’s Teaching Observation Scheme. Designed for both observers and observees, the session promotes a developmental, non-judgemental approach to teaching observations that enhances teaching quality and student learning.

Participants will:

  • Understand the purpose and benefits of teaching observations for professional development and quality enhancement.
  • Explore UWL’s policy and procedures, including observation frequency, documentation, and data handling.
  • Learn how to conduct and participate in observations effectively, with a focus on constructive dialogue and reflective practice.
  • Develop skills in providing and receiving developmental feedback, using real-world scenarios.
  • Engage with Ofsted-aligned principles that emphasise learner progress, recall, and active engagement.

Interactive activities, breakout discussions, and case-based tasks help participants build confidence and consistency in their observation practice, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collegial support.

Feedback from previous attendees of the workshop includes:

"Useful to her other peoples views and ideas of situations"

"An important session to complement CPD and a reminder of the importance of reflective practice. I found it particularly useful as I have been mentoring colleagues recently and helping to develop their teaching practice."

"It was helpful to reflect and learn from other colleagues about different teaching approaches and how to phrase feedback to collegueas to support their self-reflection."

"This is a very important training. I think this should be made mandatory before observing anyone or being observed"
