About this Event

‘Mad, bad and dangerous to know’, ‘joyous ecstasy and brooding despair’, ‘the sighing wind, the chilly night, the bird in its flight’

Who were the Romantic poets and what do we know about their work? In this session we will explore the common threads and contradictions of Romanticism. Looking at a range of poets and their work, we will explore the key concepts and ideas which shape the movement and consider the implications for teaching this to pupils at secondary school. The session will focus on building subject knowledge about the Romantic poets and drawing on rich examples from writers such as William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Charlotte Smith. In addition, we will explore a range of knowledge-thorough strategies for teaching Romantic poetry to pupils throughout secondary school. This will include a sample scheme of work, resources and extra practice materials to support your pupils
