Event description

Description

For 2017 Edinburgh Art Festival is excited to partner with the Serpentine Galleries to deliver an exciting Teacher’s CPL event at the beginning of the new school year. Set against the backdrop of the Edinburgh Art Festival’s commissions theme ‘The Making of the Future: Now’ find out more about the Build Your Own Pavilion national campaign to support young architects aged 8-16 to design public spaces for the cities of the future.

Open to teachers and educational practitioners who are interested in art, design, architecture and placemaking this CPL session will provide a practical framework for you to deliver Build Your Own Pavilion in your own classrooms, either as a one-off session or over several weeks and provide you with ideas for class topics helping you to meet your new learning outcomes.

Led by Edinburgh Art Festival and Kidesign, the session will cover researching your neighbourhood through collaborative mapping, architectural drawing and hands-on model making. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions about how to inspire your young architects and find out more about teaching next generation design technologies such as CAD and 3D printing.

The session will include light refreshments.

ABOUT EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL

Edinburgh Art Festival is the UK's largest annual festival of visual art and brings together the capital’s leading galleries and museums, alongside new public art commissions every August. Our programme is unique in combining ambitious presentations of contemporary art alongside major solo and survey shows of artists from the 20th century and historic movements. Our commissions programme champions new work by Scottish and international artists. 2017 festival dates: 27 July-27 August

ABOUT KIDESIGN

Kidesign is an educational company inspiring students to pursue careers in design, technology and engineering through creative STEM curriculum projects in CAD and 3D printing.

ABOUT BUILD YOUR OWN PAVILION

Build Your Own Pavilion is a nationwide campaign to celebrate architecture and encourage young architects everywhere to design public spaces for the cities of the future. Inspired by the Serpentine Pavilion, the Serpentine’s annual commission of temporary buildings by world-famous architects, Build Your Own Pavilion invites young people aged 8-16 to consider the relationship between architecture and public space and to design the architecture for the cities they would like to live in.

ABOUT THE SERPENTINE PAVILION

The Serpentine Pavilion 2017 is designed by award-winning architect Francis Kéré and is inspired by the tree that serves as a central meeting point for life in his home town of Gando in Burkino Faso. As an architect, he is committed to socially engaged and ecological design in his practice.
