Julia Midgley is an artist, printmaker and reportage artist. She has a special interest in medicine, military medicine, surgery and rehabilitation. Acting as an official Fly on the Wall in the War Artist tradition she uses drawn lines to capture the consequences of war wounds and the approach of medical teams helping the afflicted.

Drawing is the bedrock of her practice, life being stranger than fiction is an underlying theme. Reportage or Documentary Drawing has become an important element of her portfolio. In 2017 she was official artist to the Liverpool John Moores University 20th Anniversary Roscoe Lecture series. In 2019 her reportage drawings were exhibited at The Chelsea Arts Club, London.

Before her retirement in 2013 she was Reader in Documentary Drawing at Liverpool School of Art & Design where a one-woman exhibition of her drawings was held in December 2018.

Her talk will look at official war artists; surgeon artists within a medical context, and her own time working within military medical teams and at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court.
