AN INTRO TO MASTERING
Join Izzy McPhee, a Bristol-based mastering engineer in the Weird Jungle collective, as she unpacks the process of Mastering - the final step in the music-making process.
Izzy will offer a comprehensive introduction to mastering, suitable for artists and producers looking to get their music mastered, as well as people considering mastering as a career choice.
Topics will include:
- Why you should work with a mastering engineer
- Preparing your mixes for mastering
- The mastering process (with a demonstration)
- Formats, file types, metadata
- How to communicate with your mastering engineer to get the best results.
Mastering should not be an unknown and mysterious part of the process. Izzy hopes to break down any misconceptions and make it less of an intimidating prospect, as she truly believes that mastering should be accessible to anyone making music.
ABOUT IZZY MCPHEE
Izzy McPhee is a Bristol based mastering engineer who works as part of Weird Jungle, an independent mastering collective. Izzy’s professional development has been supported by the likes of Saffron Music and Arts Council England, and Izzy continues to receive mentoring from the senior team at Weird Jungle.
Izzy strives to elevate an artists’ work through her mastering, taking it to its greatest potential by capturing the character and true ‘essence’ of each individual track. With ten years of DJ experience and critical listening behind her, knowing how a track should sound and feel in a multitude of settings is her specialty.
The last 3 years has seen Izzy accrue over 300 mastering credits, with work spanning genres and styles, including Walt Disco, Dream Wife and Marla Kether. Izzy’s work was most recently recognised at the 2024 Music Producers Guild awards, where she was nominated in the ‘Rising Star’ category, which recognises talent, growth and notable contribution to the music industry.
Izzy continues to call for increased diversity in the music industry, and is a passionate advocate for racial and gender equality. Recognising the need to nurture talent from all backgrounds, Izzy prides herself in offering accessible services to all, particularly under-represented and self-funded artists. This stance is supported by her involvement in communities who share in this goal, including the 2% Rising network and Saffron’s online members club.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
