MAKING MUSIC WITH VINTAGE COMPUTERS
1980s computers might surprise you – a whole world of vibrant sounds and rhythms hides within their circuit boards. And did you know you can start experimenting without owning any hardware at all?
In this online workshop, YouTuber and Musician Paulee Alex Bow (SonicState, Magical Synth Adventure, Vogue Renege) will explain the whys and the hows to making music with retro computers – detailing their approach to composing with “obsolete junk”.
Paulee may have a bias towards one computer in particular, but this workshop will offer a general approach to micro music making, whatever hardware or software you choose to focus on.
ABOUT PAULEE ALEX BOW
Paulee Alex Bow has been making music with vintage computers since the age of thirteen, when they found their first Amiga 600 in a second-hand store for £100. Nowadays, they release under the alias Vogue Renege, and are also active in the mod scene (a subculture focused on old-school digital formats) as Varta Deathspill.
Paulee has garnered a devoted following via their YouTube channel, Magical Synth Adventure, where they share deep dives from their creative process, as well as candid reflections about their experience as an autistic person. Paulee is also a podcaster and writer for Sonic State and composer for the documentary series Arcade Dreams.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
