About this event

Business • Startups

The startup world is fast-paced, competitive, and full of opportunities — but also marked by structural barriers that Somali founders and professionals continue to navigate. Tech for Growth: Perspectives of Somalis in the Startup Ecosystem brings together a diverse panel of leaders who represent different corners of the startup journey: venture capital, operators, and community organisers.

This is not just a conversation about technology, but about building sustainable pathways for Somali innovators and entrepreneurs. From accessing funding to scaling teams, from grassroots support to AI breakthroughs, our speakers will share first-hand insights on what it takes to thrive in the current ecosystem.

Meet representatives from Somalis in Tech, including Abshir Ahmed, and Hana Abdi, TD, Ahmed Ghelle , Abi Ahmed and more guests to be confirmed.

Why attend:

Somali founders, creatives, community organisations, and anyone passionate about how our community can thrive through technology. This session is designed for entrepreneurs, students, tech professionals, and anyone curious about how Somali voices are shaping the global startup conversation. Expect practical advice, candid reflection, and forward-looking insights.

After the discussion, a small business showcase will set up for three Somali or Somali-led tech ventures the chance to share their work directly with attendees.

Abshir Ahmed is a seasoned Software Engineer with a robust track record in both startup environments and established organizations. As the Founder and Technical Director of Somalis in Tech, he leads a dynamic global community of over 4,000 members, fostering diversity and inclusion within the tech industry.

Hana Abdi, also known as HanaCodes, is an award-winning speaker who has been in tech for over 10 years. She is the founder of Hana Codes and the community Bridge The Gap In Tech. In 2021, Hana was featured in the book The Voices In The Shadow, which showcases and amplifies the voices of game-changing black women in tech.
