Tech Meetup August
Date and time
Join us on the first Thursday of each month for two short talks on tech with drinks and pizza.
About this event
Agenda
- Drinks and Pizza
- Opening Circle
- Glasgow Spaceship yard with Tom Walkinshaw
- Break
- Getting started with AI & ML in Azure with Carole Rennie Logan
After drinks and pizza with a chance to chat to other attendees, we have an opening circle where attendees briefly introduce themselves and can make announcements (on other events, recruitment, looking for work etc.).
Then we move to the lecture theatre for our two talks.
Talk 1 - Glasgow Spaceship yard
Tom is the Founder/CEO of Alba Orbital Inc who offers the lowest cost turnkey access to Space right here in Glasgow, Scotland.
Talk 2 - Getting started with AI & ML in Azure
In this talk we'll introduce some of the key concepts in AI & ML. Then we will explore the services available to developers in Azure with some use cases for where they could be used in a project.
Carole is a Principal Engineer at Equator, Microsoft MVP & a local meetup organiser.
Who should attend?
Tech Meetup is a generalist event for everyone in the Glasgow tech community. We welcome people with all levels of experience . Even if you are starting your journey into tech as a student or bootcamper or your thinking of starting your development career, you are more than welcome.
Why should I come?
As well as learning from your peers at our talks, you get to meet other developers and expand your network, and we also share what is going on in the wider Glasgow developer community. If you are still not sold, we have free drinks and pizza!
Do I have to pay?
No, it's completely free. Sponsors supply money for food and drink.
Who are the organisers?
Tech Meetup is run by Keith Harrison and Joe Wright, who have both worked in tech and run community events in Glasgow over the last few decades.
I would like to speak at Tech Meetup
If you would like to give a talk please get in touch:

I'd like to do a talk but I've not given one before
No previous speaking experience is required and we really encourage new speaker. In fact lots of people have given their first talk at Tech Meetup. We'll give you all the help and support you need to do your first talk.
Is you venue accessible?
Yes. Our event is held at Strathclyde Students Union and all the rooms and floors we use can be accessed either on the flat or by ramp or lift.
We meet at Roasters in the foyer which is beside the main entrance and easily accessed on the flat
The talks are held in the Mandela Room which is also on the ground floor and is accessed on the flat. The Mandela room has spaces for wheelchair seating in the center which can be seen in the photos above.
The accessible toilets are on the ground floor and can be accessed by a long flat ramp which most should be able to self propel on without assistance.
Afterwards we go to the bar in the union which can be accessed by lift.
We know people have different accessibility needs so if you need any information about the venue or event or think we need to change in order to accommodate your need, please let us know.

Why are you restarting Tech Meetup?
Before covid, Glasgow had a small but vibrant tech scene with multiple events on various topics running each week. Since covid, these events are no longer running. We want to restart Tech Meetup to reboot the Glasgow tech scene and to get a new generation of people attending and running events.
I'm at Strathclyde Student Union on John Street but it's closed
Strathclyde have recently opened a new student union where the event it held. It's at 51 Richmond Street
