Technical Talk - Monitoring of Brunel Tunnel
Wed 13 July 2016, 18:30 – 21:00 BST
There is a major Network Rail project underway to modernise the Great Western route which was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel over 150 years ago. Part of this work is to add overhead electrification to the main lines.
One of these sections runs through the famous tunnel at Box, near Bath. This amazing structure was the longest rail tunnel in the world when it opened in 1841 at almost 3km long. The electrification process required significant civil engineering works to provide clearance for the new Overhead Line Equipment. Protecting the 175 year old structure during these works was a significant challenge.
Simon Maddison FIET, COO of Senceive, presents the challenges and the innovative solutions used by AECOM and Senceive to protect this slice of the UK's rail heritage during the intense 12 week project.
