As the world continues to rapidly embrace new technologies and corporations in the private sector remain on the cutting edge, regulators and citizens alike are struggling to grapple with their varied impact on our lives, which is felt unevenly across disparate geographies, and across many different lived experiences.

From AI to deepfakes, from social media to social good, new technologies every day raise complex questions about privacy, security, and the role of government in shaping our digital future. Discussants will share their insights on the latest developments, explore how their work intersects with politics and technology, and explore what’s on the horizon for technology governance this decade.

Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, interested in politics, or just curious about how technology is changing the world, you’ll come away with a better understanding of the current landscape, as well as ideas for how to shape your own academic or professional career toward away with an understanding of current efforts for tech governance, as well as how to get involved through your own work paving a way toward a better world.

Panelists:

Elisabeth Siegel is a DPhil candidate and Clarendon Scholar in International Relations at the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford. Her research explores how the course of artificial intelligence development is affecting U.S.-China relations, and vice versa. She has worked as a consultant and researcher on several projects on emerging technology politics and currently helps lead TAE Technologies Inc.’s UK presence. She is the co-convenor of the Oxford Center for the Changing Character of Warfare’s Working Group on Cyber Strategy and Tech Statecraft. In July 2021, she was a visiting fellow at the American University of Iraq Sulaimani at the Institute for Regional and International Studies. She has a BA in Global Affairs from Yale.

Cassidy Bereskin is a DPhil candidate and Clarendon Scholar at the Oxford Internet Institute focusing on interventions for improving online trust and reducing individuals’ susceptibility to AI-generated online deception, misinformation, and misrepresentation. She is the Director of the Oxford Synthetic Media Forum, the UK’s first expert convening on generative AI & society. Previously, Cassidy worked on The Alan Turing Institute’s Online Safety Team researching the prevalence and interventions for misinformation, conspiracy beliefs, and vaccine hesistancy in the UK.

Marta Ziosi is a DPhil candidate in Algorithmic Bias and a Researcher on Global Initiatives on AI at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. Her research lies at the intersection of Fairness, Accountability and transparency in ML, and AI policy. Marta is also the Chairwoman and Co-founder of AI for People, a non-profit organization whose mission is to learn, pose questions, and take initiative on how AI can be used for social good. Previously, Marta worked as an AI Policy Researcher at The Future Society and at the Berkman Klein Centre for Internet & Society at Harvard University. She was previously a trainee at the European Commission in DG CNECT.
