Tue 13 June 2017, 09:30 – 16:00 BST
Geography teachers, join us for a unique day of CPD culminating in a live molten lava demonstration...
Chaired by leading Geographer Simon Ross, this CPD day will provide geography teachers with invaluable information and ideas to take back to the classroom.
The day will include a keynote presentation by Cambridge University PhD student Thorbjorg Agustsdottir, who will present an update on volcanic activity in Iceland, considering the behaviour of Iceland's active volcanoes and discussing how they are monitored. Thorbjorg will focus particularly on the recent activity of Bardarbunga Volcano.
Also on the itinerary:
A consideration of practical classroom applications in delivering geographical skills through tectonic activity.
A fresh look at fieldwork in schools today, such as the new GCSE and A level requirements, helping to develop professional confidence and skills.
Workshops from Simon Ross and Alan Kinder, Chief Executive, Geographical Association.
Free resources produced by Discover the World Education.
An introduction to the wonderful GIS tectonic resources produced by ArcGIS.
Plus, an amazing Lava show!
You will witness a demonstration of molten rock poured over a giant ice cube. Performed by Professor Robert Wysocki, from The Icelandic Lava Show, this will be a unique and memorable end to an informative and entertaining day.
