Event description

Description

Join us for a Livestream of our first TEDxExeterSalon on 7th October 2017 at Exeter's RAMM!

This simultaneous Livestream of our Salon will explore how technology meets the real world. Working closely with the Met Office’s Informatics Lab, we’re inviting speakers from innovative companies, including Google’s DeepMind Technologies and Amazon, to explore how technology is transforming our lives in ways that are exhilarating yet often controversial.

Speakers include:

  • Raia Hadsell, research lead on robot navigation and lifelong learning at Google DeepMind;
  • Alasdair Allan, scientist, author, hacker, and journalist;
  • Simon Johnson, who uses games, play and agency to help people understand complex subjects;
  • Neil Lawrence, who leads Amazon Research Cambridge, where he is a director of machine learning.

They will share insights into how machines are teaching themselves to understand their environment, and how tech can reveal the collective consciousness – or hive mind – of large groups of people. More speakers will be announced via our website.

LOST WEEKEND 6 - 8 October: A new festival for Exeter

The TEDxExeterSalon will feed into many exciting events happening across the city as part of LOST WEEKEND, a new 3-day festival of music, art, ideas and technology. Lost Weekend celebrates Exeter as a hub of creativity and innovation by inviting world-leading artists, thinkers, technologists and musicians to come out to play. There will be gigs, talks, workshops and playful art-works all over the city: in the streets, the library, the parks, the bars, the shops and the venues. Even in the Cathedral.

TEDXEXETER

TEDxExeter is organised by a team of local volunteers and licensed by TED, a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. More than 180 livestream events were planned for TEDxExeter’s 2017 conference in April and people from over 50 countries watched the day live online. Our talks have now been watched over 14 million times and many are translated into multiple languages.
