Description

TEF TALK is a series of strategic seminars which aim to bring HE and HE in FE staff together to examine the impact and implications of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and to explore alternative approaches to the metrics to understanding, recognising and rewarding teaching quality in higher education in the UK.

These seminars are part of a UCU commissioned research project on 'understanding, recognising and rewarding teaching quality in higher education: an exploration of the impact and implications of the Teaching Excellence Framework'. They will be taking place in a number of different venues (see the list below) and are facilitated by the research team from Birmingham City University CSPACE research centre.

At each seminar, colleagues will be contributing to discussions on HE learning and teaching, the TEF and alternative approaches to understanding, recognising and rewarding teaching quality in higher education. This will be a great opportunity for colleagues to feedback on what's happening at their institutions with the TEF, share alternative approaches to the metrics on learning and teaching, contribute to and further develop the current debate around the quality of teaching in HE.

Colleagues from HE and HE in FE providers are invited to participate in this seminar session hosted by the University of Bristol on 19thJune 2018. The number is limited to 30, so please book your ticket as soon as possible.

This seminar is open to all HE and HE in FE colleagues. If you can't make this one then look out for the other seminar dates and venues in the list below:

Lunch and refreshment are provided at this event. Please contact the research team if you have any special dietary requirements before 11th June 2018.

About the research project:

'Understanding, recognising and rewarding teaching quality in higher education' is led by Dr. Matt O'Leary, Dr. Amanda French and Dr. Vanessa Cui at Birmingham City University CSPACE research centre. The project is commissioned by UCU's Education Committee and runs between February and October 2018.

The TEF is a priority area for UCU's Education Committee. This project aims to provide UCU with up to date information on what's happening with the TEF at the institutional and subject level and influence policy debates on the TEF, especially in the run up to the independent review in 2018-19.

The project includes an online survey (closes on the 8th June 2018) on UCU members' awareness, involvement and perception of the TEF in their workplace.

The project also involves five TEF TALK seminars in Birmingham (7 June), London (12 June), Edinburgh (15 June), Bristol (19 June) and Sheffield (21 June). These seminars are intended to follow up some of the initial issues raised in the survey and enable colleagues to further contribute to the discussions and debates on the TEF.
