About this event

One-day course

This training course is designed to assist participants in building connections with children and young people while equipping them with effective tools and strategies for providing the best support possible when delivering difficult information.

Aims:

  • To equip participants with skills to create a supportive atmosphere for challenging conversations.
  • Explore effective strategies for preparing to share difficult news with children
  • Learn how to respond and follow up appropriately
  • Develop the ability to connect with children in a way that facilitates the sensitive communication of tough information and taking in to account age appropriate methods
  • Learn about the developmental stages and cognitive changes that influence a child's capacity to understand, process and recall information
  • Explore how children's experiences shape their ability to communicate their feelings and needs, gaining insight into the legal aspects of sharing information with children and the diverse ways they may react to difficult news.

Participants will engage in various activities, whether in large or small groups or through individual work. The course will include scenarios, video clips, and a chance to practice skills in a safe setting, guided by a supportive and experienced facilitator.

Furthermore, learners will gather various tools and strategies to help children express and manage their emotions. This includes examining resources like Winston’s Wish and Mary Corrigan’s Tools for Talking about Feelings, along with effective questioning techniques. The course will also introduce the ‘SPIKES’ protocol, a six-step approach used by medical professionals for delivering bad news.
