About this event
TEN by TEN is a registered Community Interest Company.
This practical knowledge workshop will be an introduction to the process of dyeing with natural indigo where we will look at some of the origins, histories, benefits and outcomes of working with organic colour.
In the workshop, we will get to grips with the essential equipment and skills needed for dyeing with indigo. We will test the dye out on a range of natural fabrics using various techniques such as tie, fold and object, to see how many shades of blue can be achieved, while learning about the role indigo played in colonial history.
We will also discuss social/climate justice and some of the negative effects of working with synthetic dyes on both people and the planet to better understand why we need to find more and more ways of circular, responsible and equitable methods of design within fashion.
We welcome all abilities although the session will be geared more towards beginner's to indigo dyeing.
Workshop duration: 2.5 hours
What you’ll need:
- Opinions and an interest in social/racial/environmental justice

Samantha
I’m a textiles and fashion designer exploring Black history using sustainable materials. I founded clothing brand Tens Studio in 2016. Systemic racism highlighted during the pandemic led me to research grassroots activism within Black communities. This fuelled my desire to share skills that have helped me to reconnect with nature and made sustainability more accessible.
Natasha
A recent graduate of MA Fashion Futures at London College of Fashion - a course that places sustainability at the heart of fashion practice and encourages questioning and critically thinking about environmental, social, cultural and political aspects of sustainability. My work aims to highlight how social and cultural issues affect and are embedded within the fashion industry, via film, recycling and up-cycling fashion textiles and natural dyeing.
Our workshops are built on a social value model, meaning that every ticket sold equals a free workshop space for a young person (between 11-16 years old). Through your purchase, we will be able to offer a series of free natural dyeing events at Peckham Levels for young people from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds over the 6 weeks summer holidays 2022.
