Online event
Join us for an online networking session where we'll hear from experts in climate change and sustainability.
About this event
In this free session, you'll be able to network with teachers from across Merseyside and we'll update you on resources available as part of the Ten Tonne Challenge.
We'll be joined by experts in climate change and sustainability from Oxfam, Gillmoss Recycling and Discover Centre, Studio Thrift and Hope For The Future:
John McLaverty is a youth campaigner for Oxfam GB. Oxfam works with schools and young people to help create a world without poverty. This includes producing curriculum resources for teachers to use in the classroom and supporting opportunities for young people to campaign and volunteer in their schools and communities. You can learn more at https://www.oxfam.org.uk/education/
John will speak about the 'Schools Speak Out' programme and opportunities for young people to learn more about why sustainable fashion is important and to plan events raising awareness about sustainable fashion among their peers.
Kirsty Martin is the Waste Awareness Officer at Gillmoss Recycling and Discover Centre which offers a unique visitor experience for education, community and uniformed groups. Kirsty will share what's on offer for school groups both at the centre and online. A visit to the centre allows groups to see how waste is collected and sorted - a Wallace & Gromit worthy machine! Learn more at: https://www.veolia.co.uk/merseyside-and-halton/RDC
Emma Summerscales is a local artist and maker who runs Studio Thrift, specialising in repair and reuse skills and 'visible mending' education and workshops. Emma will share her work, which can be delivered in schools, and her experiences of engaging young people with mending. Learn more here: http://emmasummerscales.com/
Rosie Wright is Schools and Youth Lead for Hope For The Future; a climate charity which works to equip communities, groups and individuals across the country to communicate the urgency of climate change with their local politicians. Rosie will share what support is on offer through their youth work which aims to equip young people to become the changemakers from within the boundaries of their own school or community by facilitating effective engagement between young people and their elected representatives. The Ten Tonne Challenge is a curriculum linked, creative approach to understanding how our clothes affect the planet. Teachers who are taking part have been able to access online training sessions, curriculum linked resources with lesson plans and virtual assemblies.
