Description

Ten Years of Politics and Security in Ethiopia - 2007 to 2017

Sandy Wade

The after effects of the 2005 elections were still very evident in 2007. The succeeding 10 years saw elections in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2015 and enormous change in Ethiopia, not all of it for the better. There were multiple engagements by the Ethiopian government with Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya - and Egypt. The Ethiopian Armed Forces found themselves committed to operations in Somalia both within and outside AMISOM, in Sudan in UNAMID on the border between Sudan and South Sudan and Abiyei, and in UNMISS in South Sudan, while continuing border security operations against, and sometimes in, Eritrea and in the Somali region of Ethiopia and in Somalia. In 2016 a State of Emergency was declared in response to widespread unrest in the country. The full outcomes of this unrest are not yet clear

Colonel Sandy Wade was the British Defence Attaché in Ethiopia 2007 - 2010. After that he was the Military Advisor to the European Union Special Representative to the African Union 2010 - 2013 and then, on retirement from the British Army, Head of the Political Section in the European Union Delegation to Ethiopia.
