Event description

Description

The Open Studio will give an insight into the firm’s projects and how their thirst for experimentation helps them realise complex projects often with very low-cost means. This puts them alongside other unconventional structural engineers that can realise complex bespoke projects whilst drawing on the fundamental knowledge and experience derived from handling large conventional projects. During the Open Studio there will be a special presentation of Dulwich Pavilion and its ‘floating’ timber roof. The firm’s expertise includes tensegrity structures originated by Buckminster Fuller in the 1950s. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop dedicated to tensegrity and the potential of these structures to encourage the deployment of more of them in London. The StructureMode team will guide you through a hands-on exploration of the tensegrity world following the steps Buckminster Fuller drew. There will be an introduction to the basic principles of designing tensegrity structures followed by scale-modelling of tensegrity modules.
