This course takes a detailed look at what it means to be an effective subject leader in a secondary school.
You will leave with a clear understanding of what both your department (and other classroom based staff) and senior leaders need from you and how to deliver it.
The course will also show how you can evidence your work to support you in sailing through performance management and OFSTED and provide quality examples of what a subject leader folder should include, including Data analysis, exam analysis, SWOT analysis, subject development plans, evaluation of impact reports, evidence of provision of CPD.
It will also deal with some of the key challenges faced by subject leaders in a secondary setting including decisions about exam entry, dealing with under performing teachers, managing teachers who are timetabled across departments including non-subject specialists, the impact of having senior leaders teaching in your department, and the differences in type of pressure faced by core and foundation subject HODs.
This course is aimed at HODs in their first couple of years in post, 2iCs considering subject leadership and experienced HODs who feel that they would like to be more effective than they are. The course would also be very valuable to senior leaders who line manage HODs and feel that they are not getting as much as they would like from their HODs.
