Description

Don’t let sleeping bugs lie

Bugs and issues creep into our systems through all sorts of pathways and gaps. What if we as testers were the cause of some of that bug churn because of our personal habits or lack of easily acquired knowledge? That’s a deeply concerning thought. Hannah Pretswell and Jack Brewis have been looking into this from very interesting but very different perspectives.

Hannah has been looking at our sleep patterns to see if we are developing bad habits (doing the bad stuff) that leads to other bad stuff happening. Fresh from her prize-winning delivery of this talk at North East Agile, her revelations may open your eyes and your mind wider than you anticipate. Although, hopefully, not put you off your sleep!

Jack has been looking into how a tester used to functional testing can take what they have learned from that way of thinking about testing and apply it to security testing. In fact, he went so far as to develop a training session for people new to security testing. If you or your team are interested in getting into this fascinating area of testing, this will be a very good talk for you.

Details

As a tester, you should not let sleeping bugs lie dormant and undiscovered in your applications.

The Sleepy Tester

A lack of proper sleep means you may miss certain issues in your application by taking the path of least resistance through your testing, so what are those factors interrupting your sleep and what does good sleep look like?

Get a head start with Security Testing

Similarly, if you don’t know how to test for the low hanging security issues in your application, there is a danger that these may damage your product and your reputation. Not all of us can engage dedicated security testing until late in the development cycle so is there anything that a tester embedded in a feature team can do to start looking for issues close to the code?

How can testers mitigate the chances of the bad things happening? One way is to go and talk to others working in the industry who have considered these questions and listen to what they have to say. With that in mind, please join us for our second London ‘Test Brekkie’. Our talks will cover positive sleeping habits and how to start in security testing.

Speakers

We are proud to introduce two visiting Scott Logic testers to the London office:

Jack Brewis (Test Engineer – Newcastle).

Jack is a Test Engineer at Scott Logic who joined 1.5 years ago. Joining as a Grad straight out of Lancaster University, Jack has already had the chance to experience testing on a wide variety of platforms. Security has been an interest of his since university and he is always keen to expand his knowledge further.

Hannah Pretswell (Senior Test Engineer – Newcastle)

Hannah is a Senior Tester and has worked at Scott Logic for 4 years. She has a fascination with how the human mind can affect our abilities to do our daily jobs well in unexpected ways. She co-organises the Newcastle MoT meetup in the Newcastle Scott Logic office and recently won a cute robot at an Agile Lightning talks competition for a short version of her talk on our sleeping habit.

The event will be hosted by our Lead Engineer, Elizabeth Fiennes

Food

Bacon/egg/sausage sandwiches, fresh fruit, coffee and orange juices will be provided, and we can also cater for vegans (If you have dietary requirements, please let us know).
