Test Pitting at Rock Art near Kirkcudbright
Date and time
With so many examples of prehistoric rock art around Kirkcudbright, why not help CYDI test the ground to see what we can find?
About this event
There are over 3,000 of these types of carvings across Scotland, and a large concentration of them can be found in Dumfries and Galloway with around 80 near Kirkcudbright alone! They date back several millennia to the Neolithic period (4100-2500BC) but what they represent remains a mystery.
For two days this June, Can You Dig It is teaming up with some members of the Kirkcudbright Rock Art Team to investigate the ground around a couple of these sites and look for any artefacts or structures that might tell us more about their location. It’ll also be a great chance to spend some time looking up close at these beautiful carvings!
A gentle-paced but all outdoor session, with a small friendly group. Most people won't know each other. There will be a short walk in which will involve uneven terrain.
No experience of archaeology necessary and open to all ages. We'll provide all the equipment that you'll need. There will be parking and a toilet available a short walk from the site. We recommend stout footwear and loose comfortable clothing, and you will need to bring a packed lunch and water with you.
There will be a choice of activities on the day - you don't have to dig, we'll also need help with photographing, taking notes, sieving and bagging finds.
Full joining instructions will be sent out to everyone who has booked on a few days before the event.
