Overview

Explore the challenges and opportunities in testing the efficacy of antimicrobial coatings across different built environments.

In this interactive session we will explore the challenges and opportunities in testing the efficacy of antimicrobial coatings across different built environments, with a focus on pathogens, materials, and testing methodologies.

Workshop Overview

This interactive session aims to address three core questions:
1. Which microorganisms are targets to control within different built environment settings?
2. What antimicrobial materials can we use to kill or control them?
3. How do we incorporate durability and resistance to other chemicals and environmental factors into antimicrobial efficacy testing?

Who Should Attend

- Microbiologists and public health professionals
- Coating developers and material scientists
- Designers and manufacturers (especially in transport and the built environment)
- Facility managers and infection control specialists

How to Prepare

- Reflect on your experience with antimicrobial surfaces or testing.
- Consider examples or case studies you can share.
- Review any relevant standards or protocols you use.

Background to the BEST Network

The BEST Network is a multidisciplinary community of UK scientists, engineers, technologists, industrialists and policy influencers, funded for 3 years by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). We aim to collaborate and contribute to the manufacture, design, testing and deployment of antimicrobial materials for transport and the built environment, strengthening hygiene strategy with effective, evidence-based antimicrobial surface treatments and materials.

The network measures of success are expected to include research collaborations, grant applications, standardised testing practices, industry publications, policy changes and working practice changes, but we are led by the needs of the network.
