Testing Times: The Future of Education in Wales
Thu 1 December 2016, 17:30 – 20:00 GMT
It’s over sixteen years since Wales was able to start making its own decisions about education. In this debate Dr Philip Dixon, author of Testing Times: Success, Failure and Fiasco in Education Policy in Wales since Devolution, and three other leading authors on education in Wales – Professor Gareth Rees, Gareth Evans, and Professor Leighton Andrews – will come together to debate the future of the education system in Wales.
This event takes place just a few days ahead of the publication of the 2015 PISA results, a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students.
Attendees will be invited to put their questions to the panel for debate:
Dr Philip Dixon, former Director of ATL Cymru and author of Testing Times: success, failure and fiasco in education policy in Wales since devolution (Welsh Academic Press)
Gareth Evans, former Education Editor at the Western Mail and author of A Class Apart: Learning the lessons of education in post-devolution Wales (Welsh Academic Press)
Professor Leighton Andrews, Professor of Practice in Public Service Leadership and Innovation at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, former Minister for Education and Skills in the Welsh Government, and author of Ministering to Education (Parthian)
Professor Gareth Rees, Research Professor, Cardiff University and the Wales Institute of Social & Economic Research, Data & Methods (WISERD), and author of Is There a Crisis in Welsh Education? (Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion)
Chair: Professor Sally Power, Director of WISERD Education
There will be a drinks reception after the debate to give those attending an opportunity to continue the discussion over a glass of wine.
This event is one of Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences seminar series and is organised in partnership with Welsh Academic Press.
