Description

Cardiff University's College of Physical Sciences and Engineering invites you to the next event in our inaugural Lecture Series, delivered by Professor Irena Spasic from the School of Computer Science and Informatics.

**This lecture takes place from 6-7pm however please join us for refreshments from 5pm in the Council Chamber (Main Building), and again after the lecture.

What does it take to understand a human language? Humans use two types of knowledge to make sense of written words: knowledge of language and that of the world. The ways in which we acquire such knowledge is the bone of contention between rationalism and empiricism. Rationalists, including Noam Chomsky, believe knowledge to be a product of innate features of the human mind, unlike empiricists who argue that knowledge is derived from experience alone. Where does that leave computers? Will they be ever able to truly understand our language? We will take a look into various ways computer programmes process written words and explore them from both perspectives. We will start from the bottom by explaining the binary code computers use to represent data (including text) and work our way up to the latest developments in language technology including deep learning.

Irena Spasić received a PhD degree in computer science from the University of Salford, UK in 2004. Following posts at the Universities of Belgrade, Salford and Manchester, she joined Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics in 2010, and became full professor in 2016. Her research interests include text mining, knowledge representation, machine learning and information management with applications in healthcare, life sciences and social sciences. She leads the text and data mining research theme at Cardiff University and is a co–founder of the UK Healthcare Text Analytics Research Network (HealTex).

Mae Coleg y Gwyddorau Ffisegol a Pheirianneg ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd yn eich gwahodd i’r digwyddiad nesaf yn ein Cyfres gyntaf o Ddarlithoedd Coleg. Yr Athro Irena Spasić o’r Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Gwybodeg fydd yn cyflwyno’r ddarlith.

**Cynhelir y ddarlith rhwng 6 a 7 o’r gloch, ond ymunwch â ni am luniaeth o 5 o’r gloch ymlaen ym Mhrif Siambr y Cyngor (Prif Adeilad) a hefyd ar ôl y ddarlith.

Beth mae'n ei gymryd i ddeall iaith ddynol? Mae bodau dynol yn defnyddio dau fath o wybodaeth i wneud synnwyr o eiriau ysgrifenedig: gwybodaeth am yr iaith a gwybodaeth am y byd. Mae’r ffordd yr ydym yn caffael gwybodaeth o’r fath yn destun gwrthdaro rhwng rhesymoliaeth ac empiriaeth. Mae rhesymolwyr, gan gynnwys Noam Chomsky, yn credu mai cynnyrch nodweddion cynhenid y meddwl dynol yw gwybodaeth, tra bod empirwyr yn dadlau bod gwybodaeth yn deillio o brofiad yn unig. Ble mae hynny'n gadael cyfrifiaduron? A fyddant fyth yn gallu deall ein hiaith mewn gwirionedd? Byddwn yn edrych ar y gwahanol ffyrdd y mae rhaglenni cyfrifiadurol yn prosesu geiriau ysgrifenedig ac yn edrych arnynt o'r naill safbwynt. Byddwn yn dechrau o'r gwaelod drwy esbonio’r côd deuaidd y mae cyfrifiaduron yn ei ddefnyddio i gynrychioli data (gan gynnwys testun) a gweithio ein ffordd i fyny hyd at y datblygiadau diweddaraf mewn technoleg iaith, gan gynnwys dysgu dwfn.

Derbyniodd Irena Spasić radd PhD mewn cyfrifiadureg ym Mhrifysgol Salford, DU yn 2004. Ar ôl gweithio ym Mhrifysgolion Belgrade, Salford a Manceinion, ymunodd ag Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Gwybodeg Prifysgol Caerdydd yn 2010, a daeth yn athro llawn yn 2016. Mae ei diddordebau ymchwil yn cynnwys chwilio am destun, cynrychioli gwybodaeth, dysgu peirianyddol a rheoli gwybodaeth drwy gyfrwng rhaglenni mewn gofal iechyd, gwyddorau bywyd a gwyddorau cymdeithasol. Mae’n arwain thema chwilio am destun a data ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ac mae’n un o gyd-sylfaenwyr Rhwydwaith Ymchwil Dadansoddeg Testunau Gofal Iechyd (HealTex).
