Description

Textiles 100: Make Your Mark Workshop

Join us for a day of workshops to celebrate 100 years since partial suffrage, when the first women in the U.K. gained the right to vote. As well as short talks and performances throughout the day, you’ll be able to try drawing, designing and embroidering your own Suffragette-inspired handkerchief.

This event is free of charge and open to people of all age groups, abilities and backgrounds. Whether you choose to draw, write or sew your design, creative practitioners will be on hand to assist with handkerchief-creation and all materials and tools will be provided. Simply drop in, and stay as long as you would like.

The Suffragette’s motto was ‘Deeds not Words’ and, as a part of the campaign to win the right to vote, women from all parts of the country participated in protests to further their cause. Hundreds of women were put into prison for these acts of political activism. While these prisoners were not permitted to use pens and paper, some were allowed to sew and embroider as this was considered a suitably gentle and feminine activity. Instead of creating dainty designs, they used the craft as a covert act of resistance and embroidered their names and experiences on domestic items, including handkerchiefs. The handkerchiefs still inspire us today and show the ways in which these women made their mark, both literally to record their stories, and historically by helping women gain the right to vote.

Textile 100: Make Your Mark is part of a new collaboration between London College of Fashion, University College of London and the V&A in which residents of East London are invited to explore the theme of women’s suffrage through creative making activities.

The V&A are offering an exclusive tour click here to sign up.
