Description

Domestic textiles play an important in our lives and family histories. Textile fragments, garments and objects can often hold specific memories or meaning e.g. Grandmas button box, table cloths for special occasions or saved baby clothes. During this course the tutor will encourage the recycling or repurposing of these treasured fabrics and materials. Bring along items or pictures and share your textile stories at the first session as inspiration for a discussion to inspire ideas.

A relaxed and experimental course, exploring a variety of surface design techniques and practical skills such as appliqué, drawing with a sewing machine and hand embroidery, to create considered textile compositions inspired by the history and rituals of textiles.

Students will be encouraged to play and experiment with fibres and fabrics and led through a variety of experimental stages in design and construction. You will combine and assemble appropriate materials and work towards a final piece or pieces of textile art.

No previous experience necessary.

Students will need to bring:
A basic sewing kit: scissors (1 large and 1 small & pointed), pins, needles, thread.
Any fabrics/fibres/design inspiration that you would like to incorporate in your work.

If you have a sewing machine please bring it.

The tutor will provide a sewing machine and an iron & board to share, inspirational materials, plus a basic kit of fabrics/haberdashery/equipment.

Kate Strachan joined Phoenix Brighton in 2008 and was previously a member of Red Herring studios. During this time she has worked freelance in a variety of media as a designer and maker, including costume and set design, textiles, youth/community projects, residencies, teaching, and corporate events. Kate currently teaches fashion, textiles and printmaking part time and produces her own pieces using mainly vintage fabrics or linen and makes limited edition silkscreen prints on textiles and paper.
