Event description

Description

Is it possible to know London and not know the Thames?

This is a chance for you and your family to explore and learn about one of the most iconic landmarks in the world.

What is the state of the Thames? Do animals live in it or is it biologically dead? What wildlife lives alongside it and what do they tell us? How many tides are there each day? What are the rules and hazards of the foreshore? How have people used and misused the Thames over time?

Beginning with a bird spotting walk along the Thames Path from Chiswick Pier to Chiswick Eyot (if you pronounced it "eight" you're correct!), we will then go onto the foreshore where participants can take part in river dipping using nets and spotter sheets to try catch and identify river creatures. With the help of your guide you will find out what lives in the river and the current state of the health of the Thames.

This activity is suitable for individual adults or families with children over 5. If you would like to bring younger children or those with special needs please contact us for advice. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear wellies, walking boots or old trainers but please no open toed sandals or similar. Be prepared for rain or shine and a bit of mud. Waterborne diseases can be a risk therefore it is important that those with open cuts or eczema have them covered. You will need to wash your hands afterwards at the Pier House before eating and drinking. If you prefer to wear rubber gloves then please bring these with you.
