Thames, Trains, Tubes & Tunnels!
Event Information
About this Event
The first part of our travels will take us by double decker bus along the Strand & Fleet Street through “Legal London” and the City, past St Paul’s Cathedral and on to Tower Hill. There we transfer to the Docklands Light Railway for a ride on a driverless train above the streets of London’s 3rd City known as Canary Wharf. A different world will unfold around us as we head through what was the hub of the largest and busiest port and docks complex in the world and is now completely regenerated as an ultra modern, state of the art business and finance district. The architecture here is among the most striking, imaginative and cutting edge in Europe. Next, a ride above the River Thames, on its way to the sea, by the Emirates Airline cable car system. Weather permitting, we will enjoy views north as far as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and below us, the Thames Flood Barrier, keeping the Capital and it’s people safe. Next, London’s most recently built underground line, the Jubilee, opened in the 1970’s then later extended in the 1990’s, will whisk us below ground from North Greenwich to Canary Wharf and from here or West India pier, we will travel along London’s most important and most historic thoroughfare, the River Thames, westbound to London Bridge by Thames Clipper river bus. The railway station at London Bridge, recently completely revamped by a multi million pound remodelling programme, was actually the first to open in 1836 and we’ll take a short ride by train, wending our way through the incredibly complex viaduct system above Borough Market and Southwark to London’s busiest rail and tube interchange at Waterloo. The last stage of our travels will be on the Baker Street & Waterloo (Bakerloo) tube line back to Leicester Square/Covent Garden/Charing Cross area.
