Event description

Description

An exploration of therapy in popular culture with Dr Miltos Hadjiosif

Psychologists are in possession of a wealth of academic and clinical descriptions of psychotherapy; yet very little attention has been focused on the ways in which the practice and profession are represented in popular culture. Films, TV shows and novels (i.e. Analyze This, In Treatment, The Sopranos, The Golden Notebook) have offered some potent description of what might transpire between therapist and client, often with comedic or dramatic elements exaggerated to engage the audience.

This talk will introduce some common tropes of how psychotherapy is portrayed in the aforementioned strands of popular culture before zooming into a comparatively neglected branch of pop culture: pop music. Dr Hadjiosif will talk about his research into constructions of psychotherapy in the lyrics of pop songs and take the audience on a journey of (mostly) great tunes, deconstruction (from a Foucauldian perspective) and psychotherapeutic literature, before we chew on the question: is pop music singing the praises of psychotherapy? And, more importantly, does it even matter?

Dr Miltos Hadjiosif is a Senior Lecturer in Counselling Psychology at UWE Bristol and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research has focused on the discursive and narrative dimensions of psychotherapeutic knowledge and calls for an interrogation of popular culture in order to nuance the relationship between the consulting room and the ‘real world’. Miltos is a Committee Member of the BPS Community Psychology Section and has worked with a wide range of clients in NHS, voluntary, specialist, and primary care contexts.
