Event description

Description

'That Crazy Agile Thing' is a free one day conference being held in the heart of Leeds. As well as talks on such areas as mob programming in the real world, leadership skills and testing agility, there will be an open space (where you get to set the agenda so that it covers the areas of agile which are most important to you) as well as games and a free lunch!

The conference is brought to you by the organisers of Agile in Leeds and Agile Yorkshire and is firmly rooted in the local agile community, giving you the chance to network, find out what others in the area are doing and pick people's brains for ideas.

Agenda for the day...

9:00 Arrival

9:30 Welcome

9:45 'Mob Programming in the Real World' with Mark Matthews

When problems get hard and we mob or swarm on them, how does pairing and swarming and mobbing work in the real world with real people and real personalities?

Mark is currently a "Lead Engineer" (whatever that is - perhaps "opinionated guy with a big gob and some experience" ?) helping the NHS build a new suite of applications on cloud-hosted platforms

10:30 coffee break

10:45 'Leadership' with Sarah Glenville

Sarah is an enthusiastic and motivating speaker who has held several positions in Agile organisations and is passionate about inspiring women into a role in STEM careers. She has worked in many male dominated environments and is a strong believer in diversity being the key to a successful team. Sarah is currently a Scrum Master at Sky, where she ensures the wellbeing of her team and empowers them to continuously improve their practices whilst still meeting the high expectations of their customers.

11:30 Open Space setup

Your chance to define the agenda. What areas do you want to learn more about? What do you struggle with? Bring your ideas for discussion at the open space.

12:00 lunch break

Food will be available throughout the open space until 14:15.

12:15 Open Space part 1 / Feature Ban game with Royd Brayshay

There will be the choice between 3 simultaneous open space discussions and a feature ban game.

13:15 Open Space part 2

A choice between 4 simultaneous open space discussions.

14:15 'Devops in a Data Warehouse - Inside Out' with Andy Burgin

Your organisation may be a high flying technology driven company, providing highly available reliable services to your customers. You may be mature in your devops adoption, maybe your local tech press refers to you as a unicorn. But somewhere in that organisation there may be some pockets of resistance where the devops adoption didn't reach.

This is a story of how devops was brought into one such pocket, not by a top down strategic move but by a team of frustrated engineers who could see the benefits the rest of the company was enjoying. We proved even in a non traditional devops environment such as Data Warehousing and CRM it could still happen, this is how we did it.

Andy works as the Lead Devop Engineer in Sky Betting and Gaming's Data tribe. His squads' responsibilities are to maintain the Data Warehouse Hadoop cluster; working along side several engineering squads that provide data services that drive their CRM and Insights function.

15:15 coffee break

15:30 'Testing Agility' with Melissa Howe

During software development, having a rapid feedback cycle is key to having a quick turnaround and output. A developer wants feedback, in minutes not hours, whilst it's still fresh in their mind. The shorter the feedback loop, the quicker a team can produce quality software. Understanding the values and importance of different types of testing helps us to create a valuable set of test cases.

Melissa is currently a Lead Software Engineer in Test and Scrum Master at EMIS, and has been involved in testing for almost 5 years. Her previous background was in Interactive Media design at university and games development. She is passionate about automated testing, teamwork, and improving ways of working.

16:15 Ending stuff

16:30 Social interactions...

17:30 Further social interactions at the pub...
