About this event

We're excited to announce the sixth talk of our series: ‘That famed place of aquatic gamboling’: the story of swimming in the Clyde with Lucy Janes.

This talk by PhD researcher Lucy Janes will share the little-known story of the Clyde as a place for bathing and swimming, from being a shallow stream with grassy banks, through to increasing pollution from industrialisation and growing dangers from dredging. Despite these drawbacks city residents continued to use the river for leisure, competitive races and swimming spectacles, whilst also demanding cleaner, safer water.

This event will also include a contribution from the hosts of the podcast Who Owns the Clyde. This citizen investigation, initiated by writer Louise Welsh and architect Jude Barber, is diving deep into the murky waters of the river’s ownership and its untapped potential, exploring the Clyde through a kaleidoscope of diverse voices, soundscapes, and poetry.

From historical legacy to hopes and dreams, come along to learn more about the city's swimming past and join the conversation on what the future may hold for the River Clyde.

Tickets are by donation, with a suggested contribution of £2 - £10. Your support helps us continue to run these events and bring insightful discussions to the community.
