About this event

Science & Tech • Science

This online seminar brings together two distinct but deeply relevant areas of research by our Global Majority doctoral researchers. They will offer insights to how personality traits and leadership styles drive success and adaptation in different global contexts, and disinformation in the Global South.

Saheed Ibrahim (Doctoral Researcher – Birmingham City University)

'Save me from my Mother-In-Law': Understanding dis/misinformation dimensions in the Global South

This paper takes the form of a conceptual review of prior research to highlight the dimensions of disinformation in the Global South, expatiating on why experiences from the Global North are insufficient to understand the narratives disinformation takes in highly polarised contexts. It explores how the socio-political, economic, and cultural factors of countries in the Global South fuel the spread of disinformation. The paper contributes to disinformation studies, especially during electoral cycles, showing how disinformation not only circulates but is also interpreted and acted upon differently across electoral contexts.

Nsikan Oghenemega Umoh (Doctoral Researcher Birmingham City University)

CEO Leadership, A Personality Traits Based Approach to Strategic Decisions in SMES: Evidence from Nigeria and UK

Nigerian SME leadership remains underrepresented in research, presenting opportunities to extend the Upper Echelon Theory using the Big Five Personality Theory beyond Western contexts. Conversely, the UK’s formal, structured SME environment is supported by stable institutions and extensive data. UK SMEs represent 99% of their businesses, employing 61% of the populace (Hutton, 2024; Department for Business & Trade, 2024). Adopting a mixed methods approach, this study seeks to explore how Chief Executive Officer (CEO)’s personality traits influence corporate strategy (CS) in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK).

This event is for Birmingham City University and University of Wolverhampton Postgraduate Researchers. Please use your university email address when registering - the Teams link will be sent in advance of the seminar.

This is part of the That’s Me! Eliminating Barriers to Postgraduate Research Study in the West Midlands project. This collaborative project between the University of Wolverhampton and Birmingham City University that aims to widen participation in postgraduate research, focusing on UK-domiciled students from Global Majority ethnicities. This project is supported by Research England under the increase access and participation for Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in postgraduate research study funding stream.
