Description

The 1+2 Languages Leadership Programme

SCILT and Education Scotland are now accepting applications for places on the 1+2 Languages Leadership Programme, the flagship national leadership programme has been running since 2014 and was recognised at GTCS Excellence in Professional Learning Awards in both 2017 and 2018.

Previous participants also rate the programme highly:

My experience of the 1+2 LLP has been wonderful and informative on so many levels. I have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the course as I have previously mentioned and have effectively networked with like-minded colleagues from across the country. I have been inspired and motivated to take all I have learned into my context and promote the importance of 1+2.’ (2018-19 participant)

Sharing ideas and experiences with [other] teachers was very useful. It was also very invigorating to be in a room full of people who love languages as much as I do and who see the worth of learning other languages. It has also given me the confidence to refer to research and explain the importance of foreign language learning in raising attainment and help make the links with other learning. I have come away with many ideas about parental engagement which I intend to present to my SMT.’
(2017-18 participant)

The 2019-20 programme comprises a 4 day Summer School in July 2019 with further optional elements in spring and summer 2020 which can lead towards completion of learning activities on SCEL’s
Framework for Educational Leadership and/or the award of GTCS Professional Recognition: Leading Learning in Languages.

This year the Summer School takes place from Monday 1st to Thursday 4th July 2019 at the University of Strathclyde’s city centre campus in Glasgow.

The Summer School features:

  • an exciting variety of speakers with a broad range of expertise in teaching and leading languages
  • Masters level professional learning
  • a balance of theory, policy and practice around language learning and teaching
  • leadership, personal reflection and professional evaluation
  • a choice of parallel sessions
  • networking opportunities throughout

This Masters level programme supports schools, clusters and local authorities to build leadership capacity and is completely free of charge for educators in the public sector. Altogether up to 50 places are available to post-probationer teachers or teacher educators who have, or aspire to have a role in leading languages education for young people, families and colleagues in and beyond their own workplace.

The themes of the 2019 Summer School are:

  • 1+2 languages: the national picture
  • The place of languages within the National Improvement Framework and the Scottish Attainment Challenge
  • Leading languages: planning and evaluation
  • Progression in language learning
  • Parental and wider engagement in language learning
  • L3 – existing models, diversity of languages
  • Inclusive practice in languages

You do not need to commit to the optional elements of the programme at this stage, but before submitting your application, we would encourage you to discuss your application with your headteacher/line manager. This discussion should focus on how you might make the most of this professional learning in your context in the future.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided throughout the week and free accommodation will be provided to participants who live beyond 60 minutes commute from the university. Attendees will be responsible for claiming all travel receipts directly from their own local authority/institution.

Participants from Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands and Western Isles will benefit from both, free accommodation and travel.

Please note the Lord Hope Building is fully accessible with lift access available to all floors. Should you have any specific access requirements, include further detail on your application form.

Applications close at 5pm, Friday 26th April and you will be notified of the status of your application no later than Friday 3rd May.
