Practical solutions from the clinic, gym & training field

A Sunday at Southampton FC’s stadium to change how you manage movement on Monday and beyond. A day full of practical application of movement solutions, drawn from multi-disciplinary expertise. A mix of highly experienced clinicians and coaches drawn from both high performance and private practice, sharing insight on the implementation of movement retraining strategies for all.

Session 1 Practical application S & C in running

It seems increasingly accepted that enhancing running performance takes more than just a well-structured running programme. Changing running performance through the systemised application of strength and conditioning principles requires a comprehensive understanding of the training adaptations elicited by both loaded and unloaded movement. Here, high-performance coach, educator and author, Rich Blagrove, supplies practical applications to allow clients to build performance without simply increasing running volume.

Led by Richard Blagrove, Course Leader and Senior Lecturer for BSc Sport and Exercise Science, School of Health Sciences, Birmingham City University

In 2015 Richard published a book with The Crowood Press entitled 'Strength and Conditioning for Endurance Runners'. Richards extensive work with distance runners provided the inspiration for his doctoral research which investigates the impact of strength training on the physiological determinants of performance in adolescent middle-distance runners.

Session 2 Integrating Movement for Programme Design

If movement retraining supports client’s long-term goal achievement, how is targeted intervention blended in to periodised programmes? In this session Lincoln and Clare, present a multitude of retraining opportunities that exist within well-designed performance programmes, to support time-efficient movement management.

Led by Lincoln Blandford & Jeannnete Hoftjizer
Jeannette
currently works in private practice and is aligned with the Johan Cruyff Institute and several other talent programmes of the Dutch Olympic Committee. Several professional track and field, speed skating, ice hockey, basketball, and tennis clubs currently utilise Jeanette as their specialist performance advisor.

Lincoln,
High Performance Movement Consultant

The ‘High Performance Movement Consultant’ role requires him to filter a wide range of movement disciplines into bespoke performance solutions for teams and their athletes. This process is guided by a pragmatic interpretation of current fatigue, pain, and muscle synergy research and is evident within his journal articles, championing the need for an inclusive multi-disciplinary approach to solving complex problems set by the movement system.

Session 3 Managing the Hip Through Movement: Retraining Insights

For the athlete, the hip is typically central to both their career success and longevity. In this session, This session offers highly targeted movement retraining to ensure all clients’ hips stay robust and in the face of performance, lifestyle and lifespan challenges.

Led by Steve Sparks, U23 Physiotherapist Southampton Football Club.
Steve will share retraining insights from his 10 years of experience of working within professional football. Steve places a particular focus on the use of movement retraining as both the intervention of choice to support his players at the club. The session will focus on retraining to build resilience to reduce injury risk and elevate performance. His interests are injury prevention through varied and robust movement patterns, with a specialist interest in hip and groin injury prevention and rehab.

Session 4 Synergies of the neck & shoulder

The human neck and shoulder possess huge amounts of motor redundancy, with many muscles capable of performing the same role, allowing for the formation of muscle synergies. In this session, Mark supplies clinical tools to evaluate the efficiency of each synergist around the neck and shoulder to manage pain, pathology and both initial and recurrent injury risk.

Led by Mark Comerford, Clinician / Educator, Movement Performance Solutions (UK), University of Southampton (UK), Performance Rehab (Australia)

Mark’s vision, creativity and profound understanding of the human movement system has allowed new ground to be reached in the systematic analysis and management of movement impairments. He is the ‘ultimate practical master’ of movement retraining, combining a lightning rapidity of thought and a truly vast multi-disciplinary clinical reasoning knowledge base with an innate talent for exercise delivery. He is a performance and rehab consultant for various sporting and professional organisations. He has been presenting internationally for over 3 decades and has many publications.
