Description

This is an annual meeting: Emphasis will be placed on disease management including the management of obesity, strategies for multiple or single treatment, new developments in the management of diabetes and certain complications. The discussion will be focused on the cost benefits of therapeutic approaches.

The programme involves opinion leaders in diabetes management from Italy, France, Ireland and the UK.

Prevention of Obesity : The importance of defining appropriate therapy for obese patients at risk of diabetes is to be discussed with particular emphasis on the role of bariatric surgery.

Therapeutic options in diabetes: There will be a debate on the strategy of using multiple drugs and specifically whether multiple drugs are introduced initially or in a step-wise fashion. In the same vein on therapeutic advances, there will a discussion about new features in the management of type 1 diabetes.

Prevention and management of selected diabetes complications: Three complications of diabetes will be discussed, one a major complication, cardiovascular disease, the other two complications less well-recognised with uncertain management plans, namely non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and bone metabolism. International leaders in these respective fields will illustrate their approach to these important problems.

Timings

Registration is from 08:30, the morning session will commence at 09:00 and the afternoon session will conclude at 16:15. Lunch will be provided from 12:45 – 14:00.

Travel options

By bus

The following buses stop outside or close to the hospital: numbers 4, 8, 25, 56, 172 and 242.

By tube

The closest tube stations are Barbican, Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Paul's which all are between 5-10 minutes walk. Barbican and Farringdon are served by the Hammersmith and City Line, Metropolitan Line and Circle Line. Blackfriars is served by the Circle line and District line. St Paul's is served by the Central Line.

By train

The nearest National Rail stations are Blackfriars, Cannon Street, City Thameslink and Farringdon. All are located within walking distance of the hospital. Liverpool Street station is a short tube, bus or taxi ride away.

By car or taxi

There is no public parking at the hospital. If you do need to drive, there is a multi-storey car park close to the hospital on West Smithfield which is run by the City of London. The drop-off and pick-up point is in the Square, accessed via King Henry VIII Gate or the hospital entrance on Little Britain.

*Please note that the most convenient entrance to take is the King Henry VIII Gate, on West Smithfield. Please proceed through this gate, past the Saint Bartholomew's Hospital Museum on your left hand side and into the hospital courtyard. Please then turn right and walk to the Robin Brook Centre,where the main enterance is on your left. Once inside, the symposium is taking place in the Morris Lecture Theatre.
