Event description

Description

The third in a series of smart networking events, the 9% Event aims to inspire and empower women in business in Brighton, now with gin tasting from Blackdown Distillery! Named after the current UK gender pay gap, this exciting evening will combine a new kind of networking with short talks from three inspirational women, who will share their stories of how they got to where they are today; their business stories, pitfalls, peaks, troughs and what it's like to be a woman in each of their industries. On top of this, there will be tea sampling from Bird & Blend and gin sampling with Blackdown - an innovative award-wining producer of finely crafted spirits.

The event is open to all women, in any industry, whether you're employed full-time, a freelancer, a start up or a sole trader - there will be something for everyone. Please note that ticket sales will close a week before the event, and we expect it to sell out.

Previous attendees have said: 'The 9% event - truly inspiring! It was so great to meet so many like-minded, entrepreneurial women in an informal, relaxed setting. I made some great connections and hopefully, in time, some friends too. An absolute must-have for your networking diary' and 'the best networking event I've ever attended.'

THE SPEAKERS

Krisi Smith, Founder & Creative Director, Bird & Blend Tea Co

Krisi is the founder of independent award-winning tea company Bird & Blend (formerly Bluebird Tea Co), a true Brighton brand stalwart and the first and only UK tea company specialising in Tea Mixology, with a range of over 70 blends. Krisi started the business packing tea in her bedroom with her husband and co-founder,only a few years ago and they are now the proud owners of 7 Bird & Blend stores across the UK. They have so far built the company from scratch, with little outside help, and they pride themselves on being a caring, independent business with passion and independence engrained in their ethos. In addition to this, Bird & Blend is thriving online business, employing dozens of staff, is sold in more than 150 independent stockists and has won multiple awards. Krisi has been at the helm of all this, and has even found time to publish a book about her favourite subject - the World Atlas of Tea! She will be discussing her career thus far, and how she turned her passion for tea into successful business with a £2.1m revenue.

Laure Moyle - Founder & Chief Fairy, Pudding Fairy

From an office job in Lyon to market research in China, from heading up web design teams to training polo ponies in Paris, Laure's career has been hugely varied, before she founded hugely successful artisan chocolatier and bespoke cake design business Pudding Fairy. As well as being a competitor on Channel 4's Bake Off: Creme de la Creme, Laure and her work have been featured in The Guardian, The Telegraph, Rock My Wedding and many more. She has created a birthday cake for Ed Sheerhan and counts the Langham's Executive Pastry Chef and Bake Off judge Cherish Finden amongst her mentors. She will discuss how she turned her baking passion and French patisserie heritage into a thriving business, her tips for success in a crowded marketplace and how she came to be described by her customers as 'one of the most extraordinary cake makers in Sussex.'

Saskia Mullins

If you want to design and build a unicorn bike that farts bubbles, lighting that mimics a thunderstorm or create a stage that's been shipwrecked for the pirate party to end all pirate parties, Saskia is the woman you call! Having designed sets for Channel 4, project managed stages at Secret Garden Party, dressed sets for Seedlip at Harvey Nichols, worked with Torture Garden Productions to create amazing immersive event experiences and set dressed for Sweaty Betty and La Bodega Negra amongst many others, Saskia's experience over the years is hugely varied and increibly fascinating. In addition to this, she is also a celebrated milliner, designing and creating jaw-dropping hats for commissions for the Daily Mail, The Horror Channel, The Guiness Book of World Records and Eurostar. Hear her journey through fashion, art and design and learn how you turn your passion for creativity into a career.

The Networking

The 9% Event aims to offer a smarter, more effective way of networking. When you book your ticket, you will receive an email asking for your top three objectives from the networking section of the evening; for example, to meet other people in your industry, to meet other freelancers and to meet potential clients. We will put you into groups, each with a colour code, so that when you arrive, you can locate other women in the same group as you, and instantly start up a conversation that will be useful to you both. We understand that attending networking events alone can be intimidating, but with this system, plus our friendly welcome, we will put you instantly at ease and allow you to make the most out of meeting others.

We hope there will be many useful connections made, and even more friendships!

The Venue
68 Middle Street is an events space designed to be the home for digital events, local businesses and start ups. An amazing, creative, modern space in the heart of Brighton, 68 Middle Street is also the sponsor of this event. Please note that the venue is fully wheelchair accessible.

Timings
6pm - 7pm: Smart networking and drinks
7pm - 8pm: Speakers and questions
8pm - 8:30pm: general networking

If you would like to attend the event but are unable to get along to the networking section at the beginning of the evening, please specify this, so we don't put you into a networking group. Please note that there are a limited number of earlybird tickets at a cheaper rate.

We expect this event to sell out (last one sold out two weeks prior to the event) so get your tickets as soon as possible! Ticket sales will close a week before the event to give time to sort out the networking groups for the most effective event for everybody attending.
