Event description

Description

The very first in a series of smart networking events, the 9% Event aims to inspire and empower women in business in Brighton. Named after the current UK gender pay gap, this exciting evening will combine a new kind of networking with short talks from three inspirational women, who will share their stories of how they got to where they are today; their business stories, pitfalls, peaks, troughs and what it's like to be a woman in each of their industries. On top of this, we have gin sampling from the fantastic Brighton Gin to make the evening go with a swing!

The event is open to all women, in any industry, whether you're employed full-time, a freelancer, a start up or a sole trader - there will be something for everyone. Please note that ticket sales will close a week before the event, and we expect it to sell out.

The Speakers

Kathy Caton - Brighton Gin

Founder of Brighton Gin, Kathy Caton will share her business story, from her 'lightbulb moment' on Brighton seafront that gave her the idea to found Brighton Gin, to the huge success of the gin brand today. Being named as one of the Sunday Times's Top 10 Gins, and representing the UK talking about gin at the European Parliament in 2015 have been just a couple of career highlights for Kathy. We can't wait to hear how she went from radio broadcasting to gin distilling, and her path to creating such a much-loved Brighton brand, with an annual turnover of £500,000 in its third year. Kathy will also be bringing along some gin samples for everyone to try - now that's ginspirational!

Chrissy Johns - The Big Thinks

From heading up the innovation team at one of London's leading media agencies, Vizeum, and working on ground-breaking marketing campaigns for clients such as Burberry, 20th Century Fox, BMW and National Lottery, to setting up two successful entreprenurial start ups in one year, Chrissy is a woman who knows all about innovation! As winner of the prestigious Media Week '30 Under 30' award, WACL Patricia Mann Award for Excellence and IPA and Campaign Woman of Tomorrow Award, as well as being former president of Bloom UK, the network for women in communications, Chrissy has always been an inspirational figure for women in the media and communications industry. She currently runs two start ups, The Big Thinks, which specialises in working with tech companies, brands and agencies to make sense of the fast moving landscape and identify how best to focus and grow, and Interior Sourcery, an interior design sourcing service. She is a vocal champion of women in business and will provide a hugely inspiring and interesting talk, with tips for all women in any industry.

Pamela McKellar - Gingerman Group

Co-owner of the hugely successful Gingerman restaurant group, Pamela will discuss setting up restaurants in a male-dominated industry, and how she became one of the founders of the Gingerman, Ginger Dog, Ginger Fox and Ginger Pig in Brighton and Hove. The Gingerman group of restaurants are widely known throughout Brighton and further afield for their high quality of food, service and interior design, as well as their support of locally-produced ingredients. From working in restaurants in New York with her husband at the age of 18 to running some of the most well-respected restaurants in Brighton now, this promises to be a fascinating insight into female success in a very tough industry.

About the Networking

The 9% Event aims to offer a smarter, more effective way of networking. When you book your ticket, you will be asked for your top three aims from the networking section of the evening; for example, to meet other people in your industry, to meet other freelancers and to meet potential clients. We will put you into groups, each with a colour code, so that when you arrive, you can locate other women in the same group as you, and instantly start up a conversation that will be useful to you both. We understand that attending networking events alone can be intimidating, but with this system, plus our friendly welcome, we will put you instantly at ease and allow you to make the most out of meeting others.

We hope there will be many useful connections made, and even more friendships!

The Venue

68 Middle Street is an events space designed to be the home for digital events, local businesses and start ups. An amazing, creative, modern space in the heart of Brighton, 68 Middle Street is also the sponsor of this event. Please note that the venue is fully wheelchair accessible.

Timings
