Event description

Description

The second in a series of smart networking events, the 9% Event aims to inspire and empower women in business in Brighton. Named after the current UK gender pay gap, this exciting evening will combine a new kind of networking with short talks from three inspirational women, who will share their stories of how they got to where they are today; their business stories, pitfalls, peaks, troughs and what it's like to be a woman in each of their industries. On top of this, there will be beer sampling from Brighton and Hove bottleshop and bar Bison Beer, including several beers brewed by female brewers. If beer's not your bag (and we think with Bison on our sides, it will be) there will be wine and soft drinks instead.

The event is open to all women, in any industry, whether you're employed full-time, a freelancer, a start up or a sole trader - there will be something for everyone. Please note that ticket sales will close a week before the event, and we expect it to sell out.

Previous attendees have said: 'The 9% event - truly inspiring! It was so great to meet so many like-minded, entrepreneurial women in an informal, relaxed setting. I made some great connections and hopefully, in time, some friends too. An absolute must-have for your networking diary.'

THE SPEAKERS

Fal Blake - Founder & Co-Director, Gresham Blake

Fal, and her husband Gresham, launched the Gresham Blake brand in Brighton at the height of ‘cool Britannia’ in 2000. Since then, their eye-catching creations for high profile clients including Ray Winstone, Steve Coogan, Jimmy Page, Plan B and Norman Cook (aka FatBoy Slim) have brought him fashion industry recognition and an ever-growing army of customers attracted by their signature combination of quality garments with a quirky twist. With shops in Brighton and Shoreditch, Gresham Blake is an absolute icon of the North Laines and a wonderful representation of Brighton at its quirky best. Fal, a tailor with over 20 years experience, will take us through her career to date and tell us what it's like to be a female tailor making men's clothes, and who really wears the trousers...

Rachael Adams - Commercial Editor, Business & Finance, the Telegraph

Rachael is a hugely well-respected journalist, rising steadily through the ranks of Readers Digest, Which? and Money Marketing to her current position at the Telegraph, heading up the Business and Finance section of the paper as Commercial Editor. She will be coming down to talk about her experiences as a female journalist in a male-dominated broadsheet newspaper world, and how she has navigated her way through the world of journalism to reach her current position. A fascinting insight into the fast-paced exciting national newspaper industry.

Emma Smith - Talent Manager, Creative Assembly

Creative Assembly is a Sega-owned gaming studio that has won multiple awards, including BAFTAs and Ivor Novellos for its groundbreaking, world-class games including Total War and Halo. Emma has been with the multi-award winning studio for 8 years, seeing them grow to over 500 people strong, and as lead of CA’s Legacy Project, Emma and her team drive forward the studios long-term commitment to education, community and charity. She will be coming to the 9% Event to discuss being a woman in the typically male-dominated gaming world, what day-to-day life is like in a games development company and how her team are working to equal gender equality in this industry.

The Networking

The 9% Event aims to offer a smarter, more effective way of networking. When you book your ticket, you will be asked for your top three objectives from the networking section of the evening; for example, to meet other people in your industry, to meet other freelancers and to meet potential clients. We will put you into groups, each with a colour code, so that when you arrive, you can locate other women in the same group as you, and instantly start up a conversation that will be useful to you both. We understand that attending networking events alone can be intimidating, but with this system, plus our friendly welcome, we will put you instantly at ease and allow you to make the most out of meeting others.

We hope there will be many useful connections made, and even more friendships!

The Venue
68 Middle Street is an events space designed to be the home for digital events, local businesses and start ups. An amazing, creative, modern space in the heart of Brighton, 68 Middle Street is also the sponsor of this event. Please note that the venue is fully wheelchair accessible.

Timings
6pm - 7pm: Smart networking and drinks
7pm - 8pm: Speakers and questions
8pm - 8:30pm: general networking

If you would like to attend the event but are unable to get along to the networking section at the beginning of the evening, please specify this, so we don't put you into a networking group. Please note that there are a limited number of earlybird tickets at a cheaper rate.

We expect this event to sell out (last one sold out two weeks prior to the event) so get your tickets as soon as possible! Ticket sales will close a week before the event to give time to sort out the networking groups for the most effective event for everybody attending.
